Preston Track Championships at DISC, Saturday 3rd of October

Racing got under way at 6:10 pm. Three scratching’s made for a late start.

The Championship was run using Omnium Points.

The Four events were-

  • 500 metre time trial
  • 2000 metre time trial
  • Flying 200 metres
  • 32 lap scratch race.

The rider who finished the nights racing with the least number of points was the winner. Example; 1st – 1 point, 5th – 5 points ECT.

Some personal best times were achieved by most of the riders. Christian, Craig, Tony and Peter. All did personal best times in the 500 metre TT and the flying 200 metres.

Michael (Mick) Burke showed how good he is at 2000 metre riding and won this event easily. Tony McNulty showed he is improving all the time with a personal best to finish second behind Mick.

Christian Stewart was understandably the best of the riders winning three of the four events. Overall a great night was had by all with hotly contested riding. A special thanks to David Morgan and Nathan Fraser (both from the Brunswick CC) for doing the timing and the lap counting. Thanks to Hugh Schulz for his relentless efforts running the Championships.

The Club Treasurer, Leo Coles, helped fine tune some of the riders positions and gave them some skills coaching as well.

UCI World Masters Championships in Sydney 19th –23rd October.

Preston   will have five riders vying for medals at next months Championships.

Michael Burke, Craig Whitehead, Tony McNulty, Robert Devolle,

Julian Scott and Peter Wykes.

Michael Burke  is probably our biggest chance of winning a medal.

He will riding in his pet event the pursuit. Michael has prepared exceptionally well, not having much of a let up since his one hour record back in November last year.

Tony McNulty and Craig Whitehead are both in their first year at Preston and had never raced until they joined last year.

They both won medals at the Geelong Masters games back in February and race every Tuesday night at DISC with the Brunswick club and have had good results.

Good luck everyone
