Bike and Bean 34th Annual Preston Mountain Classic 27th June 2010
My perspective of the race is from a limited vanatage as I did not finish. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the race as an off limit, Masters. The weather turned out quite pleasant with some sunny breaks after a wet night leaving road surfaces slick and the sky threatening and very cold. There was a bigger than expected field which made for great competition. The undulating road to the start of the climb was fair enough and the ascent itself up Whitlesea-Yea Rd was not that steep but deceptively difficult with multiple peaks. The descent was very fast and quickly became a gently sloping downhill to Yea which for me was at a startling speed of around 50km/h. Although the next leg was on a very busy road with limited shoulder the run still allowed for some jostling of position and a quick respite if caught at the red light because of the road works. The run returning into Strath Creek along the King Parrot Creek Rd was also fast paced despite the undulations. Of course the last leg up to Murchison was the killer and were most DNFs like me packed it in. I would like to thank my fellow club members for martialling and other duties.

Preston Entrants in Northern Combine Races 2010
Saturday, 24 July 2010 - Preston Points Score, South Gisborne
One Preston rider enterant with no results but nevertheless "a very good race with interesting format". The race reward system relies on riders doing their fastest to cross the finish line at each lap around 8.4 km hilly circuit. Congratulations and accolades to all that received wins and places in each grade.
Full race results found at Northern Combine web site.
A big thanks to the organisers within Preston Club in particular Peter Wykes and Hugh Schulz. And a big thank you to the Northern Combine organinsing team.
Saturday 15th May 2010 - John Sewell Handicap, Pastoria
A number of Preston roadies have been keen to take part in this season's Northern Combine road race circuit. There were two Preston entrants in this race, George Goodrope and Matthew Bastin. The standard seemed to be quite high. The weather was fair. Low scattered cloud and cold conditions meant that warming up was essential. George had 21 minute mark which he thought to be appropriate at first until the vigour of the other riders was weighed up. After the start of the race there was not a lot that could be done. After 15km George was "out the back door thinking these guys should be giving me 10 or 15 minutes start". Matt on the other hand has a lot of race know-how and further road training to lift his game. His lack of experience may have been the cause of this 'off limit' group to break up early (within the first lap). Riding tip: learn from your mistakes! Better luck next time Matt and well done George on your efforts.
Preston at Reservoir Track
27th January 2010
Another windy night (a southwesterly which was very strong) with three Preston members taking out the first three places in the Australia Day Handicap. Mick Langan who finished third in the hadicap last week, rode extremely well to take first place. Craig Whitehead who had been celebrating Australia Day until the early hours, having a headache, and a 30 metre less handicap from last week chased well and was rewarded with 2nd place.
James Steinhauser showed he isn't far off winning with a solo effort from 120 metres to take third place by half a wheel. Nick Anskey rode like a champion again by taking out both the motor paced events.
Aidon Nund spun his gear well to take out third place in both the motor paced events.

20th January 2010
Another windy night (south easterly) with three Preston members having their first race for the season. Mick Langan who finished third in the hadicap being a new member, rode off limit with Craig Whitehead (the winner). They worked extremely well together up until bell lap where Craig's experience showed and he rode away from Mick to take the victory. A fast finishing James Steinhauser came from a long way back for a well earned second place. Mick held on for a gallant third.
Well done guys, it's been a long time since we had all place's filled by Preston members. We were also treated to a fine display of Penny Farthing riding tonight and they will return again next week to fine tune their steeds.

13th January 2010
- Chooka's 1 Mile Handicap: Nathan Larkin (Northcote) 220m, Cam Woolcock (Hawthorn) 60m, Nick Anskey (Brunswick) 90m
- 40 Lap Motor Pace: Cam Woolcock (Hawthorn), Nick Anskey (Brunswick), Aidon Nund (Brunswick)
For tonights racing a cold blusterly wind blew from the SW and most opted for a low gear of about 86 or lower. The handicap was won by a in-form Nathan Larkin who had been penalised only 30m after winning the Christmas Handicap on 16th December last year
Cam Woolcock caught and passed all the other riders and was 100 metres behind Nathan at the bell and finished 50 metres in arrears.
Nick Anskey started a little slow but battled on for third place.
The Motor Pace; with Leo Coles on the motor bike he let the riders settle in for 20 laps then upped the pace. With 18 laps to go the riders started to feel the pace and one after another they peeled off. The wind in the home straight was the key factor and if they were not sitting up close then it was all-over-red-rover.
Cam Woolcock was the only rider left with 12 laps to go and Leo upped the speed to 59-60 km/hr and Cam spun his 86.4 exceptionally well and with 2 laps to go he lost contact and rolled around for a well earned win.
