Shannon Johnson Wins Northern Road Race Championships.

Saturday 24 September at Broadford.

3 laps of the 31 km circuit, that I call the "Hell of the North". It has to be the hardest course that the Northern Combine race over. Conditions weren't ideal with a cold SW wind blowing. Cold but sunny with a very strong wind. I had the duties as Commassaire and finishing judge. Preston had three riders in the Elite Men's race. Namely - Shannon Johnson, Michael Read and Brad Wright. Michael was behind after lap 1 and never regained the group. Shannon and Brad looked like they were going OK.

Lap 2, a couple of riders had a small break on the field which included Shannon and Brad.

Finish, Shannon won in convincing style by out sprinting Steven Waite (St Kilda) with Ross Mueller (Brunswick) 5 seconds behind. Brad Wright finished a creditable 10th.

Preston only had the one starter in the Masters event which started after the Elite race. Masters 7 rider, Alan Goodrope , did himself proud by winning his age division. Alan finished 16th overall, thus beating a lot of younger riders.

Womens Race, 2 laps, 66km.

Every now and again I am treated to an exceptional performance. Today was to be one these days. With fourteen starters and all of them from the St Kilda club, I thought it would be just another race. What a pleasant surprise to see a rider way out in front on the first lap. Miranda Griffiths had a gap of over 1:15 on her rivals and had put time into the Masters men. She powered over the last lap in very hard conditions to eventually win by 3:22mins (Bridget Officer) and third place getter Amy Bradley a further 9 seconds behind . Well done Miranda, it was something special.

Victorian Masters Championship weekend, TT Saturday, RR Sunday held in Harcourt near Castlemaine

TT 20k out and back course

Well I can safely say I had my ass handed to me in the TT! Actually to be honest I didn't feel too good even on the warm up ride. After a busy race weekend last week, then another full week of training and V02 testing, throw in some extra late nights at work, the possibly my biggest mistake. Been so tight on time the only time I could get a massage was Friday afternoon, as I found out much too close to an event.

Around 4k in I just couldn't find a rhythm that would let me produce power and control my heart rate, sometimes it's just not your day. These are the times I need to work on to keep the gap as small as I can. Which is never an easy thing when you are up against the strongest TT rider in the country; Shane Miller

I had caught the two one minute riders in front of me, which was little consolation as it wasn't long before I too was passed by Shane. I simply didn't have the legs this day. Got to say it was great to see my Bike N Bean Specialized teammate Stephen Lane riding well and earning the silver. I know I need to spend more than one day a week on my TT bike and probably not just on the trainer.... Lessons learnt, time to fix my weaknesses.

RR 112k, Two 56k laps

Those of you that know me well know I don't take defeat well, especially when it's my own fault simply because I wasn't strong enough! Well the RR was my chance for redemption. Having never ridden the course before all I knew was that there was a few good old pinchers in the later part of the lap, not really my strength. The group consisted of 21 riders, which stayed together until the mentioned climbs. I will quote a couple of riders I respect quite a lot here "this is where the shit went down!" and went down it did! The peloton blew apart with seven of us breaking clear, I checked my heart rate and 190 was the figure I saw! Better keep a lid on it I thought. We all rolled turns; soon the gap was too big for anyone to bridge. It was pretty much an easy cruise until we got back to the big climb again. A bit of the normal foxing with no one wanting to sit on the front, myself included! Two riders tried to escape at the start of the climb and did a good job actually. I waited to see if anyone was going to chase and close it down, no takers. By this stage they were over 25 meters away, remember I don't like losing much? I open the gas and drove it; I heard a few clicks of the gears behind but maybe this time it was too much for anyone to come with. But with only two riders working and one fair evader the following group of 4 riders closed it down after a few k. A few attacks and counter attacks went on over the last 10k with none succeeding. The finish was one that suited me, 3k downhill with a flat kilometre to the finish. I need to give props to my S-Works Venge here too as it loves speed and the pace was high! A few attacks to up the pace again worked as it stretched the riders out; finally Gabe Carey (Team LSD) unintentionally gave me a perfect lead out. We were still about a k out when he went full gas; I jumped on for the ride. Then before anyone could suck my wheel I gave it everything I had. I was in the 11 and spinning! Did a head check holy crap I have a gap. Stephen said before the race if you win you have to do a salute over the line. I had some time to throw the hands up and savour the moment. Probably looked like a dick, but you never know how far away your next win is so enjoy them when you can... RR Results:

These results are enough for me to throw it all on the line and try make the trek to Belgium for the World Masters Final, I have a mammoth mountain to climb just to get there but will do everything I can. I want to thank everyone so much for their support and I will be calling in every and any favours I can so please don't bounce me to message bank.....

Looks like PCC is a growing contention (at least in D Grade)(Ed)

PCC at the Northern Criterium: Race Report for Saturday 29th January 2011

D division was won by a very keen and smart 14 year old James from Brunswick. God bless him, he stayed out of trouble and featured only when it counted last couple of laps. 2nd place, Simon from Mernda took the honors. 3rd went to Mark Picozzi from Preston and I finished 4th.

In B division Bradley Wright from Preston had a very solid race featured in the sprint but had to settle for 3rd.

Good solid effort from everyone and thank goodness no falls today.

John.

Races were run in between showers. The track being asphalt, showed just how good it is and dried out very quickly. New member Michael Harding (in runners) rode extremely well, considering he has never raced before and was placed in all events. A big thank you must go to all that raced as it wasn't too easy with a strong S W wind blowing and cold conditions prevailing. Also the handicapper [yours truly] would like to thank every one for not complaining, after winning the handicap. A big thank you to Adrian Pekin for carting me for 2 laps.

The KIDZ Clinic and Senior racing will resume on the 15 January.

Bike and Bean 34th Annual Preston Mountain Classic 27th June 2010

My perspective of the race is from a limited vanatage as I did not finish. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the race as an off limit, Masters. The weather turned out quite pleasant with some sunny breaks after a wet night leaving road surfaces slick and the sky threatening and very cold. There was a bigger than expected field which made for great competition. The undulating road to the start of the climb was fair enough and the ascent itself up Whitlesea-Yea Rd was not that steep but deceptively difficult with multiple peaks. The descent was very fast and quickly became a gently sloping downhill to Yea which for me was at a startling speed of around 50km/h. Although the next leg was on a very busy road with limited shoulder the run still allowed for some jostling of position and a quick respite if caught at the red light because of the road works. The run returning into Strath Creek along the King Parrot Creek Rd was also fast paced despite the undulations. Of course the last leg up to Murchison was the killer and were most DNFs like me packed it in. I would like to thank my fellow club members for martialling and other duties.

Preston Entrants in Northern Combine Winter Road Races 2010

Saturday, 24 July 2010 - Preston Points Score, South Gisborne

One Preston rider enterant with no results but nevertheless "a very good race with interesting format". The race reward system relies on riders doing their fastest to cross the finish line at each lap around 8.4 km hilly circuit. Congratulations and accolades to all that received wins and places in each grade.

Full race results found at Northern Combine web site.

A big thanks to the organisers within Preston Club in particular Peter Wykes and Hugh Schulz. And a big thank you to the Northern Combine organinsing team.

Saturday 15th May 2010 - John Sewell Handicap, Pastoria

A number of Preston roadies have been keen to take part in this season's Northern Combine road race circuit. There were two Preston entrants in this race, George Goodrope and Matthew Bastin. The standard seemed to be quite high. The weather was fair. Low scattered cloud and cold conditions meant that warming up was essential. George had 21 minute mark which he thought to be appropriate at first until the vigour of the other riders was weighed up. After the start of the race there was not a lot that could be done. After 15km George was "out the back door thinking these guys should be giving me 10 or 15 minutes start". Matt on the other hand has a lot of race know-how and further road training to lift his game. His lack of experience may have been the cause of this 'off limit' group to break up early (within the first lap). Riding tip: learn from your mistakes! Better luck next time Matt and well done George on your efforts.

Preston at Reservoir Track

27th January 2010

Another windy night (a southwesterly which was very strong) with three Preston members taking out the first three places in the Australia Day Handicap. Mick Langan who finished third in the hadicap last week, rode extremely well to take first place. Craig Whitehead who had been celebrating Australia Day until the early hours, having a headache, and a 30 metre less handicap from last week chased well and was rewarded with 2nd place.

James Steinhauser showed he isn't far off winning with a solo effort from 120 metres to take third place by half a wheel. Nick Anskey rode like a champion again by taking out both the motor paced events.

Aidon Nund spun his gear well to take out third place in both the motor paced events.

20th January 2010

Another windy night (south easterly) with three Preston members having their first race for the season. Mick Langan who finished third in the hadicap being a new member, rode off limit with Craig Whitehead (the winner). They worked extremely well together up until bell lap where Craig's experience showed and he rode away from Mick to take the victory. A fast finishing James Steinhauser came from a long way back for a well earned second place. Mick held on for a gallant third.

Well done guys, it's been a long time since we had all place's filled by Preston members. We were also treated to a fine display of Penny Farthing riding tonight and they will return again next week to fine tune their steeds.

    • 1st Nick Anskey (Brunswick)
    • 2nd James Steinhauser (Preston)
    • 3rd Rob DeBernardi (Brunswick)

13th January 2010

  • Chooka's 1 Mile Handicap:
    • Nathan Larkin (Northcote) 220m
    • Cam Woolcock (Hawthorn) 60m
    • Nick Anskey (Brunswick) 90m
  • 40 Lap Motor Pace:
    • Cam Woolcock (Hawthorn)
    • Nick Anskey (Brunswick)
    • Aidon Nund (Brunswick)

For tonights racing a cold blusterly wind blew from the SW and most opted for a low gear of about 86 or lower. The handicap was won by a in-form Nathan Larkin who had been penalised only 30m after winning the Christmas Handicap on 16th December last year

Cam Woolcock caught and passed all the other riders and was 100 metres behind Nathan at the bell and finished 50 metres in arrears.

Nick Anskey started a little slow but battled on for third place.

The Motor Pace; with Leo Coles on the motor bike he let the riders settle in for 20 laps then upped the pace. With 18 laps to go the riders started to feel the pace and one after another they peeled off. The wind in the home straight was the key factor and if they were not sitting up close then it was all-over-red-rover.

Cam Woolcock was the only rider left with 12 laps to go and Leo upped the speed to 59-60 km/hr and Cam spun his 86.4 exceptionally well and with 2 laps to go he lost contact and rolled around for a well earned win.

Races and Rides

Races take place on the roads in Melbourne, greater Melbourne and regional Victoria. Generally roads remain shared with other traffic. Although volunteer officials are often available for both rides and races to facilitate traffic at key intersections, riders' vigilance is always required. Racing and riding is not restricted to our own club events. See our news and links pages for further action... More
