In recognition of Mr Wykes' dedication and service to the Club, Peter has been given the honour and distinction of the status of Life Time Member of the Preston Cycling Club. In brief but significant ceremony at the Annual General Meeting 2011 Peter was presented with this badge of honor. Well done Peter. We hope that you may continue in any capacity to serve and guide our Club in its on-going success.

Presidents Report November 2011

posted 9th December 2011

The past year, from my point of view, has been very satisfying over all.

Club memberships are up across the board, race participation is up and results have been excellent!

Shannon Johnson's results have been spectacular...Well done Shannon.

In Junior ranks Steven Carrol had a big win on the road in Ballan Ballarat and good results at DISC. Other good results ar DISC have been enjoyed by the Slingsby boys and the Tarticchio anf Fiddler families. Also Zac Pekin is showing some form. Its looking good for the future. Well done to Peter Wykes for his gold and two silvers at Adelaide Masters.

Saturday morning Kidz Clinic has grown to the point that it had to be split up into two sessions.

  • 10:00 to 12:00 for Kidz Licence holders and
  • 12:00 to 2:00 for Juniors

Some of the success of Saturday mornings must be attributed to the good food supplied by Rhonda and Edna... Well done girls!

Also the efforts of Peter and Alec and the Moms and Dads of the Kidz who are always willing to help out...Well done to you all!

We intend to have racing every Saturday afternoon during the summer. There are several trophies up for grabs which seniors and juniors can get their names on.

Thanks to Matt for his efforts as Secretary and his recent involvement with the Northern Combine and Cycling Victoria Meetings

Peter's involvements over several years as handicapper and commisaire, Vice President and coach have, I beleive earnt him a Lifetime Membership and I have nominated him for one.

Peter and I have put a lot of work with the Northern Combine over many years. Our recent times we have done less and concentrated on Junior Development, I think with some success.

However, for Preston to stay in the Combine we have a presence in the running of the group

Our road Open Event was a reasonable success. Entries were down on what I expected but I have some ideas for next year...

Our Junior Carnival was dirupted by the weather and racing at the resheduled date was good.

It is our intention to enter as many teams as we can muster for Club Teams Premierships an both road and track in their coming sessions. This Club has a proud history in teams racing respectively on the road and track. It would be nice to see those times back.

Congratulations to our Members Shannon Johnson and Steven Carroll

posted 27th August 2011

Shannon Johnson (M1) and Steven Carroll (JM17) did the unbelievable!

Shannon won the Melbourne to Ballarat off the very handy mark of 18 minutes by out-sprinting a huge bunch with more than 60 competitors in the finish, thus upsetting the home town fans just in front of Scott Townsend (Ballarat Sebastapol Cycling Club), Jeremy Doolan (Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club).

Steven won the Ballan to Ballarat for junior riders. He won narrowly by beating Mathew Castles (Geelong CC ) and Declan Dempster (Albury- Wodonga CC) As they are both new to road cycling their wins were outstanding. This has to be one of the most outstanding performances of the Preston Cycling Club for many years.

Well done boys and we hope you have lots more.

Melbourne to Ballarat Classic

  • 1st - Shannon JOHNSON (18mins) (Preston CC)
  • 2nd - Scott TOWNSEND (18mins) (Ball-Seb CC)
  • 3rd - Jeremy DOOLAN (18mins) (Ball-Seb CC).
  • Fastest Time - Steele VON HOFF (Scr) (Chel and P CC)

Shannon Shines at the 2011 Cycling Australian Masters Road National Championships

6th to 9th October Ballarat Victoria

Preston CC would like to congratulate Shannon Johnson for his outstanding performances at the 2011 Australian Masters Road Cycling Championships. In his age group, Masters 1; he won the road race, and the criterium, 4th in the time trial and was then awarded the Champion of Champions for his age category. Well done Shannon! Not too bad for a guy in his first year of cycling.

13th Australian Masters Games Adelaide SA

7th to 16th October 2011

Two Preston members ventured over to compete on the recently sanded Super Drome. We both found the track very fast and rode gears higher than usual. Tony McNulty, Masters 4, finished a creditable 4th in the 750 TT and the scratch race. Peter Wykes, Masters 7, 1st 500m TT, 2nd in the sprint and 2nd in the scratch race. Tony and I applauded the overall running of the event and recommend you all have a go next time it is held in Adelaide.

Preston Cycling Club Track Championship

posted 7th April 2011

2nd April 2011 at the Preston Track. Our Saturday's KIDZ group took part in their first club championships on Saturday. The cool overcast conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm with lots of Kidz, parents and some grandparents from as far away as the UK attending to cheer on their loved ones.

Jack Sims celebrated his 90th birthday with cake & candles (kindly purchased by Edna) and a lap of honour with all the Kidz in tow.

The KIDZ results are as follows:

A Grade:1stTom Slingsby
2ndAbraham Fiddler
3rdTerry Hore
B Grade1stJesse Fiddler
2ndZac Pekin
3rdAarish Alinizar
C Grade1stAlana Humphreys-Grey

Senior Track Championships

After the KIDZ had finished it was our turn.

Tony McNulty looked the man to beat as he was first on the track and was looking very impressive. Dave Halliday sorted out a club bike and swapped his pedals from his road bike and was also looking very imposing. Adrian Pekin, John Bennett, Alex Szuba, Abraham & Jesse Fiddler were also looking threatening and yours truly not feeling up to the assignment.

After the four events were done and dusted the results were-

Seniors1stDave Halliday*
2ndPeter Wykes
3rdTony McNulty

*not bad for a bloke who hadn't ridden a track bike in a long time.

Well done to all that competed.

Special thanks to Rhonda Wykes and Edna Schulz for their delicious food and hot drinks. Also Hugh Schulz, Leo Coles and Chooka, for their commissairing and judging the Senior racing.

Reflections on the Junior Track Carnival By the President

posted 17th March 2011

The President would like to make it outrageously evident that there was an understandable disadvantage to our event because of the necessary re-scheduling both from the perspective of the competitors and our club. However, financially, we have done well if we break which we most probably will when all is balanced.

"My point of view is that was a great success as an event barring a few hiccups." Hugh says. This philosophy extends beyond the Junior Carnival, Hugh goes on to say "My feelings about events such as this and the Mountain Classic is that I am happy if we can put on a good event as safely as is possible and we break even"

Acknowledgements are offered to the dedication and hard work from the seemingly tireless efforts from our club members and elsewhere that has made this event a success which simply cannot go unstated. Thanks particularly to Dave Morgan from Brunswick club. (By the way Hugh says you look at home in a Preston T shirt). Special thanks to Sam Tarticcio who did a great job on the programs. Rhonda Wykes, Edna Schulz and Susie for cooking and catering duties. Chook on BBQ and drinks. Also thanks goes to Sissi for providing the results for our sterling commentators - Ray and Craig. And to all the boys for set up and set down

Hugh would like to make it perfectly plain that he is not about to resign. He genuinely would like to thank all for their help but he is not on his way out!

Furthermore, there is a great feeling of enthusiasm in the club and Hugh is sure PCC will go on to greater achievements. However with many of our new members joining on line ("welcome!") it has become difficult for the rest of the club to get to know you without recognsing you. Therefore the committee has decided to hold, for the club, a non-competitive social event. They have decided on a BBQ at Yan Yean Reservoir. This will be on Saturday, 16th April 2011. A start around Noon would be just right for competitors in other events.

2011 Junior Track Carnival

posted 16th March 2011

Preston Junior Carnival Results for 5th March.
After the washout on the 27th of February we finally had a perfect day. Sunny, with a light wind and a fast track.

Lots of helpers were there early and they had everything set up and ready to go on time. Thanks guys.

Dave (pinkie) Morgan pitched in with registration and program sales. Chooka fired up the BBQ. Craig Whitehead was in charge of ticket sales and did his utmost to make money for the Club. David Halliday controlled the gate onto the track and kept things running safely.

The GIRLS; Edna, Rhonda, Sue and Sam had the scones and the dim sims on the go. Racing started just after 10 am with Chief commissaire, Bob Johnston in control of proceedings. Jamie Hanson, Chris Liston, Lisa Hocking and yours truly, helping.

Our Club president, Hugh Schulz running procedures from outside the track. New member Ray Galea, calling the starters to the line, with a touch of Phil Ligget in his voice. We were treated to some very impressive riding and I'm sure our KIDZ riders must have learnt from watching because they also did very well.

There was only one fall, our very own, Terence Hore fell in the JB 13 elimination event and was treated on site by the First Aid Officer, John Parker. Although we had no winners in the "Open" racing, Luca Tarticchio wasn't far away in the handicap with a very excitable 3rd place. Alana Humphreys-Grey, who is also a defacto Preston member, had a creditable win in the JG 11 handicap.

Congratulations to all that competed and to Hugh Schulz for all his hard work, organising the event.

We hope we see you next year.

Peter Wykes.
